Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications 1. Satisfactory Completion of 60 semester credit hours of college coursework which includes at least 18 semester credit hours in biology, chemistry, physics, health science or science technology; OR 2. Two (2) years of satisfactory experience in either a laboratory or a clinical setting performing technical laboratory test and procedures; OR 3. Satisfactory equivalent combination of options 1 and 2, equaling 2 years. College study will be credited in six-month segments, with 15 semester credit hours equaling six months. Credits must include at least 18 semester credit hours in biology, chemistry, physics, health science, or science technology.

Duties Description DEC is looking for a qualified individual to assist with the day-to-day functions of the Forest Health Diagnostic Lab, which specializes in the diagnoses of forest health-related pests and pathogens, applied research, and the production of unique outreach materials used to educate and engage the public.

As a member of this dynamic team, the selected candidate will assist with all aspects of the Lab’s work, including research, diagnostics, and operations. The Lab Tech will learn how to produce images in our Imaging Lab, produce resin castings for outreach purposes, perform literature reviews, and assist with lab maintenance and organization.

This position will assist with the curation of the Lab’s insect collection: Duties include pinning and labeling insect specimens, organizing insect drawers and cataloging the collection in an Excel spreadsheet.

Will assist with the production of insect resin castings: Duties include preparing insect specimens, encasing them in resin, sanding and polishing the product.

Produce high-quality images of forest health-related pests and diseases utilizing a photography studio (training provided).

Provide operational support for field-based projects: Duties include trap cleaning, maintenance, and storage; preparation of tree cores, lure inventory.

Provide research support: Duties include data entry and assistance with literature reviews.

Additional Comments Basic knowledge of forest insects and diseases; insect pinning and preparation; photography techniques and associated software (Photoshop, Zerene Stacker), is preferred.

Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Travel may be required.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/22. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to the date listed above. Actual work schedule and duties may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
