Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Promotion Provisional: New York State Department of Health employee with one or more years of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Senior Radiological Health Specialist, Grade 18.

Public Candidates (Provisional Opportunity):

Either 1. a bachelor's degree or higher in health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, AND three years of experience in radiation protection, which includes experience dealing with radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment. Experience limited to imaging patients is NOT qualifying.

Or 2.* a bachelor's degree or higher in any area, including or supplemented by 30 college semester credit hours in one or more of the following subject areas: health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, AND three years of experience in radiation protection, which includes experience dealing with radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment. Experience limited to imaging patients is NOT qualifying.

Substitution: An advanced degree in health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology may be substituted for the required years of work experience as follows: master's degree - one year, doctoral degree - two years.

*If your bachelor's degree or higher is not in one of the areas listed above, but you qualify by having 30 semester credit hours in any combination of those subject areas, you MUST submit a copy of your transcript or a course list that includes the name of the college or university, course title, date received (or expected), and number of semester credits received per course.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in radiation protection, including state and federal standards for ionizing radiation; familiarity with the various uses of radiation producing equipment and radioactive materials used for medical, academic, and commercial purposes; inspection and investigative experience; ability to analyze written and published program material and draw conclusions concerning impact; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and handle a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment; experience managing work projects; advanced computer skills in Word, Excel, and Access.

Duties Description The position will inspect sites authorized to use ionizing radiation; participate in the registration of radiation installations and licensure of radioactive material facilities; supervise the activities of Senior Radiological Health Specialists engaged in the inspection of radioactive material licensees and radiation installations; personally conduct difficult and complex inspections; investigate accidents/incidents and recommend appropriate action; conduct investigations of allegations regarding professional conduct of Radiologic Technologists; recommend enforcement action when indicated; provide consultation and assistance to local health departments; conduct and participate in training programs; evaluate and assist in the development of standards for x-ray installations; develop regulatory guides and manuals; prepare program evaluation reports; and evaluate sites that may have radioactive material contamination.

Additional Comments Permanent or provisional full-time appointment. This position involves travel which may include locations not served by public transportation. Public candidates appointed provisionally will be required to take and pass the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, when it is given, and be immediately appointable from the resulting eligible list to maintain employment.

If three or fewer New York State Department of Health promotional candidates respond to this notice, the agency may, at its discretion, nominate a qualified employee for non-competitive promotion under the provisions of Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law.
