Minimum Qualifications Research Scientist 1 (Epidemiology or Biostatistics): Bachelor’s degree in biology, biomedical science, biostatistics, epidemiology, mathematics, public health, statistics or a closely related degree and two years of professional scientific research experience; or a Master’s degree in one of the above mentioned fields and one year of professional scientific research OR Research Scientist 2 (Epidemiology or Biostatistics): Bachelor’s degree in biology, biomedical science, biostatistics, epidemiology, mathematics, public health, statistics or a closely related degree and three years of professional scientific research experience; or a Master’s degree in one of the above mentioned fields and two years of professional scientific research; or a Doctorate in one of the above mentioned fields.

Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s or higher-level degree in public health, epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics or closely related field.
• Intermediate or advanced knowledge of SAS, geographical information systems (GIS) and Tableau
• Experience analyzing and interpreting health equity data
• Experience analyzing population-based survey data
• Experience in chronic disease or tobacco control research
• Strong organizational and critical thinking skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint
• Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.

Duties Description Under the supervision of senior investigators in the Bureau of Chronic Disease Evaluation and Research, the Research Scientist 1 (G18) will engage in research and data analysis activities supporting New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) tobacco prevention and control initiatives.  The incumbent will be responsible for conducting analysis from existing NYSDOH, state, and federal data sources to conduct surveillance; evaluate programs; and provide performance measurement data for the Department’s tobacco prevention and control initiatives. The incumbent will be involved in analyzing data collected as part of new and ongoing projects, public health surveillance and CDC reporting. The incumbent will contribute to the evidence base in tobacco control, summarizing the findings from data analysis projects to members of the DOH project team, internal, and external stakeholders, and disseminating findings through presentations, reports and manuscripts. The Research scientist 2 (G22) will perform all of the duties described above with a higher level of independence and responsibility.

Additional Comments Permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Routine travel, including occasional overnight travel and travel to areas which may not be served by public transportation, is required. (~10%). Appointment level will be determined by candidate's education, professional relevant scientific research experience and interview.
