Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Visitor Services Assistant 1 position in the New York State Museum (NYSM). The NYSM serves the lifelong educational needs of New Yorkers and visitors through its collections, exhibitions, scholarships, programs, and media and publications in science, history, anthropology, and art. The incumbent of this position will perform various duties such as welcoming and educating visitors and groups and interpreting exhibits within the NYSM. Duties of these positions include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Operate the Main Lobby desk providing information to visitors on various topics and answering questions;
• Develop and provide interpretive programs for the NYSM’s Discovery Place and the NYSM’s after-school program;
• Register, confirm, greet, and orient all school and group visits;
• Prepare and present tours, talks, programs, and Exploration Stations for diverse audiences;
• Inform NYSM Security and State Police of any threats to public safety, health, and/or NYSM property;
• Operate the NYSM’s antique carousel and provide historical information about the carousel.
• Report any concerns and issues at monthly meetings; and
• Support the Administrator on Duty with the collection and documentation of donations on Saturdays and Sundays.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent non-competitive service as a Visitor Services Assistant 1.
Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have two years of experience* in the visitor/customer service environment in a cultural institution.
*College study may be substituted for up to two years of general experience based on 30 semester credit hours being equal to one year of qualifying service.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Early childhood and/or elementary school program experience; and
• Two years of experience developing and/or implementing educationally based programming in a cultural institution.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of experience and/or transcript will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. The work schedule for these positions includes hours of 9:00AM - 5:00PM, Wednesday - Sunday, including holidays.
This position leads to a maximum salary of $49,743 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
