• Candidates must have one year of permanent service as a Direct Support Assistant and be eligible for lateral transfer; OR be in a title deemed appropriate for transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. To qualify for Section 70.1 transfer, you must have one year of permanent service in a title approved for transfer by the Department of Civil Service.

Duties Description The Direct Support Assistant duties may include, but not be limited to, the following:

• Provide direct care to individuals with developmental disabilities in a variety of programs (residential, day program, work environments, community outings) attending to their personal daily living needs such as personal hygiene, bathing, dental care and meal preparation;
• Taking care of the home individuals reside in ensuring cleanliness and safety, including the individuals in these tasks as much as possible in a teaching/assistive manner;
• Support people with goals whether it be habilitative and/or employment related. Planning and assisting people with participation in social events within their communities. Assisting with money management and shopping. Building and maintain relationships with friends and family;
• Ensure community integration;
• Encourage, guide and teach individuals in expressing personal choice;
• Administer medication and basic treatments not required by a licensed nursing staff. Monitor and report any significant health care changes or concerns;
• Help individuals to participate in games and recreational programs;
• Coach and encourage individuals to develop daily living skills;
• Provide a clean, safe and comfortable environment;
• Work with other staff to carry out and record care plans.
