Minimum Qualifications Minimum: Bachelor’s degree and five years of professional research experience in an appropriate field; or a master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
A doctorate in Biomedical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Medical Physics and three years of post-graduate experience developing biomedical equipment.
Candidates for this position should be interested in the development and maintenance of a state of the art 9.4T human neuroimaging MRI. The incumbent will be expected to work closely with NKI researchers but also with research partners in neighboring institutions (Columbia, NYU, and Cornell engineering schools) and New York State industries including GE Global Research and Communications Power Corp.
During the development phase of the 9.4T, the candidate filling this Research Scientist 4 will be working closely with NKI researchers and partnering institutions to design, build, and test the new MRI.
These tasks include but are not limited to, working on the simulations of the magnet-gradient interaction, design and mounting of the gradient coil to the 9.4T magnet, performing safety assessments, system configuration, and integration of systems electronics. Given that this will be one-of-a-kind equipment with ultra-high field strength, the candidate will be maintaining the scanner and supporting and training users after the development of the 9.4T is completed. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining (i.e. monitoring cryogen levels, updating software and electronics), developing additional equipment (e.g. custom head coils), training researchers regarding safety and operation of the scanner, and performing administrative tasks.

• Assist in the development of research grants and contracts that further the mission of the NKI and the Office of Mental Health.
• Assist in scientific manuscript preparation.

• Mentoring of junior faculty and staff.
Additional Comments BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND FEES:
Background Investigation/Justice Center Review: Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
