Minimum Qualifications Deputy Chief Investigator for the Downstate Region (position is based in either New York City, Hauppauge or Suffern). For this leadership-level position, the ideal candidate has significant law enforcement experience with a minimum of 5 years of supervisory background in a major law enforcement entity. Candidate must have extensive knowledge of New York State criminal law and procedure and New York State government operations. Candidates must be a DCJS-certified peace or police officer. Bachelor's degree is required.

Acceptable candidates must also possess prior experience: (i) supervising and personally conducting confidential, sensitive, and internal investigations, preferably in the area of contracts, procurements, and white-collar crime; (ii) managing and coordinating multi-disciplinary investigative teams; and (iii) interacting on a high-level with other major law enforcement agencies. Candidates must also display a knowledge of the relevant technical equipment used in law enforcement investigations as well as strong computer skills including not only word processing and spreadsheet management, but also an ability to expertly and creatively utilize research avenues of social media, law enforcement databases, electronic and video surveillance, and other forensic-related tools.

The ideal candidate possesses sound judgment, strong oral and written communication skills, is highly organized, has a collegial attitude, is a self-starter, works well both independently and in a team setting, and is a highly adept multitasker.

This is a Management Confidential position that is appointed by the Inspector General. The salary range is $101,403-$128,142 (Grade M-3 equivalent). New York State residency is required.

Duties Description The Office of the New York State Inspector General [“NYSIG”], as established by Executive Law Article 4-A, is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that New York State government, its employees, and those who work with the State meet the highest standards of honesty, accountability, and efficiency. The Office of the New York State Welfare Inspector General [“OWIG”], as established by section 74 of the Executive Law, is responsible for maintaining the integrity of New York State’s public assistance programs. The Office of the New York State Workers’ Compensation Fraud Inspector General [“WCFIG”], as established by section 136 of the Workers’ Compensation Law, is responsible for investigating violations of the laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of the workers’ compensation system.
The Office of the Gaming Inspector General ["GIG"], s established by the Upstate New York Gaming and Economic Development Act, has the duty to receive and investigate complaints from any source concerning allegations of corruption, fraud, criminal activity, conflicts of interest or abuse in the Gaming Commission. Collectively, the four offices are known as the Offices of the Inspector General [“OIG”].
OIG seeks a Deputy Chief Investigator for the Downstate Region which encompasses the mid-Hudson Valley, Westchester, New York City and Long Island.. The Deputy Chief Investigator is responsible for assisting the Chief Investigator in supervising and managing the investigative staff in carrying out OIG’s mission to uncover fraud and abuse in New York State agencies and entities l under the jurisdiction of NYSIG, OWIG,WCFIG and GIG. The responsibilities of the Deputy Chief Investigator include planning, coordinating, and supervising investigations; managing staff workflow and workload; reviewing and assigning complaints; directing case reviews; overseeing agency resources, including fleet vehicles; and serving as a liaison with other law enforcement agencies. The Deputy Chief Investigator will also maintain a personal caseload, including conducting interviews, analyzing evidence, and preparing written reports. Frequent instate travel is required as well as willingness and availability to work unscheduled hours as necessary. This position operates on adherence to strict confidentiality.
