Minimum Qualifications Assistant Research Scientist, Grade 14: bachelor's degree in biology, public health, epidemiology, infection control, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science, or a related field, and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.
Research Scientist 1 (Epidemiology), Grade 18: bachelor's degree in biology, public health, epidemiology, infection control, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science, or a related field, and two years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in one of the above fields and one year of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have a graduate degree in one of the fields listed in the minimum qualifications, and will possess Statistical Analysis System (SAS), Microsoft Excel, and/or Tableau experience. Experience in the following areas is also preferred: environmental, occupational, or reproductive epidemiologic research; experience in public health surveillance; and experience working with databases and large datasets. The preferred candidate will also have proficiency in the collection, management, linkage, and analysis of environmental and human health data; experience with data quality improvement; excellent written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences; strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills; and knowledge of various environmental health topics, including indoor air quality and those that affect K-12 schools.
Duties Description The position will be assigned to the Center for Environmental Health’s Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology. The incumbent will participate in all phases of epidemiological research and surveillance, including problem definition, literature reviews, study design, acquiring and managing relevant data, statistical analyses, summarizing findings, interpreting and sharing results, and preparing grant proposals, reports, articles, and other publications.
The position will also participate in various environmental, occupational, or birth defects studies; monitor and evaluate health effects of exposure to toxic substances at schools, workplaces, and in the community; conduct school environmental public health surveillance; assess exposures to identify and reduce environmental health risk; and provide public health education regarding schools and children’s environmental health. The position will also interact with various stakeholders.
Additional Comments Duties will be commensurate with appointed title and experience. If appointed as an Assistant Research Scientist, Grade 14, the incumbent will assist other research staff with these duties. If appointed at the Research Scientist 1, Grade 18, level, the incumbent will be expected to perform these duties under general supervision.
Permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Appointment level will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (less than 20%).
