Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in one of the above fields and one year of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications: The primary responsibility of this position is to evaluate exposure and health risks associated with indoor air contaminants. The preferred candidate will have the ability to critically evaluate and interpret scientific data, building blueprints and reports, and an awareness of building sciences and the influence of ventilation systems and environmental factors - such as building materials, energy type and extreme weather events, on indoor air quality (IAQ), the environment, and health. Preference will also be given to candidates familiar with building IAQ assessments or energy audits, data management and analysis programs, and demonstrating good written and oral communication skills.

Duties Description The Research Scientist 1 (Toxic Substances) will evaluate exposure and health risks associated with indoor air contaminants, with an emphasis on buildings as an interface between indoor and outdoor air quality and the influence of traditional and new building systems and code requirements on environmental and occupant health including fuels, energy efficiency, insulation, air leakage, pollutant infiltration, and indoor air quality (IAQ).

The incumbent will provide technical support for staff involved in New York State initiatives related to IAQ and health. The position will require basic understanding of the principles of experimental design, health effects of common indoor and outdoor air contaminants, exposure assessment, engineering principles, statistical analyses, and air quality instrumentation. The incumbent will prepare timely responses to public inquiries on a variety of environmental health subjects and interact with local authorities and code enforcement officials on issues related to building conditions and operations to improve IAQ.

Additional Comments Permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (less than 10%).
