Minimum Qualifications Candidates must be high school graduates and have eight years of progressively responsible technical scientific experience in a laboratory setting. College education may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to two years of the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications;

Ten years of experience as a Principal Laboratory Animal Caretaker working for a New York State entity.

Duties Description The Research Lab Technical Assistant performs and instructs Principal Investigators and their subordinate staff/students in the performance of clinical lab techniques such as general anesthesia, blood collection, and pathogen/experimental substance administration; collaborates with scientific research staff and assists them in performing and/or refining experimental techniques, treatments, and/or procedures; directs subordinate staff in the feeding and watering of animals; maintain and direct the maintenance and safe operation of complex scientific laboratory equipment, such as biosafety cabinets, rapid readout biological indicator (RRBI) readers, CO2 chambers, isoflurane anesthesia machines, autoclaves, rack washers, ventilated racks, dump stations, and cage changing stations; and observe the progress of lab animal experiments and record results and aiding Investigators’ staff in conducting proper assessments and record keeping.

Additional Comments Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required. Additionally, exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position; the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.
