Duties Description The position is located in the Public Affairs Bureau in the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). The State Parks Public Affairs Bureau is responsible for media relations, community affairs, the agency website, social and digital media, graphic arts and marketing. The bureau is the first point of contact for public inquiries to the agency’s general phone line and email inbox. The position reports to the Public Information Officer who reports to the Commissioner of OPRHP.
Specific duties will include:
Assist press operations, including writing press releases, interacting with the media and managing public meeting notification.
Assist in preparing public events and Commissioner’s appearances, including coordinating event logistics, writing remarks, and distributing media advisories.
Assist in developing content for agency social media channels, blog and eNewsletter.
Assist in answering phones, responding to public email inbox, preparing news clips.
Monitor Press Office inbox.
Assist with website updates.
Proof / send advisories and press releases through Media Contact.
Maintain current media / pitching lists through Media Contact.
Edit / approve regional and agency press releases.
Prepare PowerPoint presentations for agency leaders.
Assist with State Council of Parks Meetings, including preparation of minutes.
Respond to and troubleshoot patron questions and complaints.
Plan and assist on special events, NYS Fair, major golf tournaments.
Work with our marketing team to develop content for visual and informational displays and publications.
Additional Comments Operational Needs:
Candidates must have excellent writing and communication skills. Two years of experience in a public affairs and/or marketing atmosphere as well as customer service skills and an interest in outdoor recreation, the environment and community engagement is a plus. Bachelor’s degree in communications/marketing/public relations/journalism or related field is preferred.
