Duties Description The NYSDEC’s Division of Water (DOW), Bureau of Water Assessment and Management (BWAM), Water Assessment and Implementation Section (WAIS) seeks an Environmental Engineer Technician 1 (EET1) to support the efforts of the Toxicity Testing Unit (TTU). The TTU manages the Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) program. WET tests are a type of bioassay that uses aquatic organisms to assess the potential toxicity of a facility’s effluent upon discharge to a surface water (i.e. river, stream or lake). WET testing is required at many municipal, industrial, and remediation facilities statewide as part of the State Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (SPDES) permit program.

Under the supervision of TTU staff, the EET1 will be responsible for assisting in various oversight activities associated with administering the WET program. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Performing comprehensive data review, interpretation, and entry of facility WET test results, including toxicity and associated chemistry;
• Compiling WET test data annually, including drafting facility letters outlining additional WET testing and/or SPDES permit requirements;
• Tracking the status of required facility submittals, including management of the WET@dec.ny.gov mailbox;
• Communicating internally with DOW permit writers and/or compliance staff, as well as externally with WET laboratories and/or facility operators as needed; and,
• Assisting with WET reporting and database automation processes currently in development.
