Minimum Qualifications Reassignment Qualifications: One year of permanent Competitive or 55-b/c Service as a Farm Products Grading Inspector 1.

Provisional Appointment: If there is no appropriate eligible list of at least three people willing to accept permanent appointment for this geographic location, the Department may nominate a qualified person for a provisional appointment under the provisions of Section 65 of the Civil Service Law.
-Provisional Minimum Qualifications:
Either 1. two years of full-time professional experience* inspecting farm products for a state or federal agency;
Or 2. one year of full-time professional experience* inspecting farm products for a state or federal agency and 60 college credits;
Or 3. 60 college credit hours which includes 18 credit hours in: agriculture business, agronomy, animal science, biology science, botany, conservation, dairy science, entomology, environmental health, fishery or aquaculture, food marketing, food science, food services technology, horticulture (including fruit and vegetable science), microbiology, nutrition or dietetics, poultry science, science lab technology or zoology.
*Full-time professional experience in a position inspecting farm products must include taking samples of various farm products and grading for quality and/or condition according to state, federal, or company commodity standards, and issuing state or federal certificates.
NOTE: Full-time professional experience in a position inspecting farm products must include taking samples of various food products according to state, federal, or company commodity standards, and issuing state or federal certificates or official documentation attesting to the results of inspections.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
1. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
2. New York State residence is not required.
3. Your college credit must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. This information can also be found on the Internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm. You must pay the required evaluation fee. 4. Physical/Medical Requirements: Your physical and medical condition will be evaluated to ensure that you are able to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. 5. In order to perform the duties of a Farm Products Grading Inspector 1, you will be required to obtain a state or federal license/authorization to inspect and grade an appropriate farm product.
6. Appointment to certain positions requires extensive travel within a designated area of assignment. Appointees to these positions may be required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job. If the position requires that you operate a motor vehicle, you must possess a driver's license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. Field work and travel expenses are reimbursed on a fixed schedule.

Candidates appointed provisionally must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, and their score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained.

Duties Description The Farm Products Grading Inspector 1 will be responsible for performing inspections at Terminal Market and Shipping point locations. These inspections would include the ability to determine and certify physical characteristics of produce, while keeping notes of finding and writing a certificate with the results of the findings. Other duties include conducting Food Safety USDA GAP Audits on the farm and in packing houses, Country of Origin Audits, Branding Law Enforcement inspections in retail stores, monitoring controlled atmosphere apple storage rooms and sampling for the Pesticide Data Program.
