Duties Description This biologist position is in the Natural Resource Restoration Unit (NRRU) in the Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW). The primary task is to evaluate the adverse impacts to fish and wildlife resources from hazardous waste contamination and any associated disturbances from remediation actions and develop recommendations for mitigation of impacts for the Division of Environmental Remediation (DER). Incumbent will review work plans, analytical data reports, construction designs, and monitoring plans specific to biota and ecological activities at remediation sites. Development of recommendations will require technical writing, data analysis and interpretation, and expertise on multiple topics such as ecotoxicology, technological advancements in remediation, federal and state laws and regulations, ecological risk assessment, habitat restoration, and habitat requirements for New York State fish and wildlife. Incumbent will regularly participate as ecological expert on interdisciplinary teams requiring coordination with other programs within DFW, DER, and other Divisions of DEC.
In addition to document review and recommendation development, required field work includes collection of environmental data, direct observations of habitats, and oversight of data collection or remedial activities and biota collection. Preferred qualifications include excellent writing and verbal skills, the ability to work collaboratively, proficiency in analyzing and manipulating data, and an in-depth understanding of ecology, including ecotoxicology, interaction of species in their habitats, wetland and stream restoration, and identification of adverse impacts from both physical and chemical perturbations.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overnight travel may be required. Must successfully complete (or have completed) the 40-hour OSHA 1910.120 training course and all other required training. Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing,
and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
