Minimum Qualifications Minimum: Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience. Please note the following substitutions: four years of specialized experience or associate’s degree and two years of specialized experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree; J.D. or master’s degree may substitute for one year of specialized experience; Ph.D. may substitute for two years of specialized experience.
Preferred: The ideal candidate will have a paralegal degree; 10 years’ experience as a paralegal; and some experience in criminal defense and/or appellate matters; and a collegial and collaborative approach to team projects.
Duties Description The New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services seeks an experienced paralegal to be part of the new Statewide Appellate Support Center team located at ILS’s offices in Albany, New York. The paralegal will work closely with two midlevel Appellate Attorneys providing consultation on direct appeals and litigation support and may also help other Center attorneys with post-conviction activities. All efforts will seek to advance ILS’s mission of improving the quality of representation provided to criminal defendants by public defenders and assigned counsel. This new paralegal position presents a unique opportunity for the ideal candidate to become an integral part of a team of dedicated attorneys devoted to public service. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills; experience with criminal defense and/or appellate matters; proficiency with Word, Excel, and Power Point; experience in dealing with courts and court clerks; and the ability to both take supervision and take initiative. All case-related information obtaining in the performance of Center duties is confidential and may be subject to attorney-client privilege.
