Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in a trade related to bridge repair, maintenance and construction under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in a bridge or technical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated; candidates must be One-Person Plowing (OPP) certified to perform Snow & Ice Operations during the winter season. When candidates will be required to perform welding work on NYSDOT projects, they must possess a NYSDOT Welding Certification in shielded arc welding (SMAW) of unlimited thicknesses in flat, horizontal, 3G vertical, and/or 4G overhead positions.
Duties Description (include but not limited to): Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the assigned trades as they apply to bridge repair and maintenance operations. Ability to measure, cut and weld steel plates with acetylene and electric cutting and welding equipment to reinforce damaged and deteriorated structural steel. Ability to operate sand blasting equipment to remove deteriorated paint, scale, rust, and other undesirable material from steel and concrete bridge surfaces. Working knowledge of Highway Safety Manual as it applies to bridge repair and maintenance operations. Ability to erect scaffolds, rigs, slings, and boatswain chairs and operates under bridge inspection equipment for the inspection, repair and maintenance of bridge super and substructures. Ability to use and operate the tools, equipment, machines, and vehicles required in bridge repair and maintenance operations. Ability to supervise small groups of workers.
The incumbent will be responsible for the duties described in the Department of Civil Service Classification Standard for Trades Specialist (Bridge), (formerly Bridge Repair Mechanic), G-12. Duties will be discussed at the interview.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Additional Comments *Telecommuting: The Department’s current telecommuting agreement is valid through December 31, 2022 and is subject to extension beyond that date.
