Minimum Qualifications Current Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent-permanent competitive status as an Office Assistant 1 (Keyboarding), G6, OR a NYS employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a title at or above a G4 and eligible to transfer to Office Assistant 1 (Keyboarding), G6, under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Public Candidates: Active list candidate on the New York State Department of Civil Service's Office Assistant 1 Keyboarding eligible list#26-697 with a score of 100 or higher, OR qualified 55 b/c candidate.
Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent data entry, clerical and organizational skills; experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook; ability to work independently and prioritize multiple assignments.
Duties Description The Newborn Screening Program tests every child born in New York State for 50 congenital conditions with over 12 million test results reported annually. Babies are screened for a variety of diseases, some of which are not readily identified at birth. When left untreated in the first week or month of life, certain diseases can result in illness, intellectual disability, and in some cases, death. On average, over 1,000 specimens are tested daily by newborn screening staff. The timely reporting of these test results is critical, any delay in the performance and reporting of newborn screening test results will have an immediate impact on the health of affected babies, some of which may result in devastating health consequences, and possibly death for those seriously compromised. The incumbent will perform demographic data entry for specimens received for testing at the Wadsworth Center, Newborn Screening Program located in the David Axelrod Institute (DAI) at 120 New Scotland Avenue, Albany. There is free onsite parking. Responsibilities include: perform patient demographic data entry, document telephone interactions with providers, prepare and process various reports, letters, correspondence and documentation. Telecommuting may be considered after the training period and can be discussed during the interview.
Additional Comments *Transfer candidates serving in certain designated titles will be required to take and pass a keyboarding examination that demonstrates your ability to enter text at a rate of at least 30 words per minute with at least 96% accuracy in order to qualify for appointment. Transfer candidates may be asked for SSN to verify title history and eligibility.
