If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law.

Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.

The minimum requirements for taking the Junior Landscape Architect examination are:

Either 1. a bachelor’s or higher-level degree in landscape architecture.

Or 2. a Landscape Architect’s License from any state or political subdivision of the United States.

*Note: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university with a Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB) accredited curriculum, a Canadian Society of Landscape Architects Accreditation Council (CSLAAC),or by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable practices.

*Junior Landscape Architects who have successfully completed one year of service and have passed Sections 1 and 2 of the Landscape Architect Registration examination (LARE) will be advanced to Landscape Architect, Grade 20 (beginning salary). Failure to obtain a passing result on both Section 1 & 2 of the LARE within the first year of service will result in removal from your position.

Duties Description Under the direction of a higher-level supervisor/manager, the duties of the Junior Landscape Architect/Landscape Architect may include, but are not limited to:

• Providing Landscape Architectural technical support for capital program, maintenance, and special projects including planning, site analysis, grading, drainage, plant selection, design, and construction
• Participating in teams and technical working groups with Department staff in engineering, landscape architecture, maintenance, operations and other disciplines as well as other agencies, community, and non-government groups
• Preparing renderings, visualizations, GIS map analyses, technical media and presentation materials for decision making, design development and delivery, and for use in training, public meetings, workshops, and hearings utilizing current software tool
• Assisting with review, tracking, revision, and development of landscape specifications and approved products lists, evaluation of new products, and research into sustainable materials, design and construction techniques
• Assisting with the New York Scenic Byways Program including project reviews and tracking, corridor management plans, and support to Byways organizations
• Supporting Adirondack and Catskill Park Preserve interagency and stakeholder coordination including implementation of the Master Transportation Corridor Unit Management Plan, tracking, annual reporting, and further corridor plan development
• Assisting in the provision of technical assistance, support and development of guidance for complete streets and active transportation (bicycle and pedestrian) facility design including compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and related requirements
• Taking part in vegetation management strategies, control of invasive species,, and conservation efforts for pollinators including interactions with agency/industry/NGO technical working groups
• Assisting with environmental analysis related to federal, state and local regulations and requirements, permit applications, and the development of related policies and procedures
• Evaluating projects and materials prepared by consultants, local governments, and developers for their impact on state properties, permits, and consistency with guidance
• Assisting with review and development of visual impact assessment reports and related guidance
• Researching environmental issues affecting the State transportation network, gathering data, writing reports, and assisting with the management of ongoing Research Projects
• Preparing contract documents (plans, specifications, and estimates) for landscape components of projects including planting, signage, pedestrian facilities, erosion control plans, and storm water management plans
• Serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the Department response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Successful candidates will be expected to have good written and verbal communication skills.
