Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion, public policy, public administration, education or other fields related to diversity, equity and inclusion AND three years of educational and/or administrative experience involving the review, coordination and/or implementation of programs, policies and initiatives related to education or diversity, inclusion, equity, or equal opportunity OR three years of educational and/or administrative experience providing technical assistance to BOCES, districts, schools, or institutions of higher education. One year of experience must be at a supervisory level.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates to fill the newly created position of Special Assistant in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Within the context of the Department’s DEI guiding principles, a service-oriented approach through technical assistance and the release of guidance documents, as well as a P-20 continuum of supports and services, the Office of DEI serves to support districts, schools, and institutions of higher education across New York State in developing policies and practices that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion, and in implementing such policies and practices with fidelity. Under the supervision of a higher-level Special Assistant (functioning as Executive Director), the incumbent of this position will function as an Educational Opportunity Specialist and will provide critical support to districts, schools, and institutions of higher education in developing and implementing DEI policies and practices with fidelity. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Review and provide collaborative technical assistance to BOCES, districts, schools, institutions of higher education, local educational agencies and other State agencies;
• Collaborate with the Special Assistant (Executive Director) to develop Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) educational resources and programs;
• Facilitate and coordinate systems to share effective practices regarding DEI with the Department, educators and stakeholders across New York;
• Plan and conduct workshops and training programs which assist schools in improving the delivery of educational services as it relates to DEI and providing culturally-responsive school environments;
• Contribute to the evaluation of the effectiveness of DEI programs and policies internally and externally;
• Prepare written materials such as reports or policy documents based on analysis of data and trends as they relate to such matters as educator workforce diversity, school-based discrimination complaints, and other issues related to DEI;
• Contribute to the development of strong working relationships with DEI leaders in BOCES, districts, schools, institutions of higher education, local educational agencies and other public and private organizations across the State through the establishment of an advisory committee, through site visits, meetings, attendance at statewide and local conferences, and Department initiated events;
• Research and generate insights to inform recommendations for improving DEI and culturally responsive policies and practices at the Department and for school districts and institutions of higher education;
• Serve as a liaison with DEI committees in BOCES, districts, schools, and institutions of higher education; and
• Supervise office staff and perform other duties in support of the Office of DEI, as assigned.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is currently pending exempt class status and the incumbent will serve at the pleasure of the Commissioner of Education. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of Budget approval.
