Minimum Qualifications ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST 2: A Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences or engineering and four years of
professional experience in the natural sciences, engineering, environmental analysis or regulation, establishment of
environmental policy, or in a closely related field. One year of this experience must include involvement in environmental
analysis in support of litigation. Alternately, A Master’s degree in the natural sciences will be accepted in lieu of one year
of the experience requirement; a Ph.D. in the natural sciences will be accepted in lieu of three years of the required
experience. A Professional Engineering or Geologist license in New York State will also be similarly considered.


ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST 3: A Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences or engineering, and six years of
professional experience in the natural sciences, engineering, environmental analysis or regulation, or in a closely related
field, one year of which must have included responsibility for the supervision of subordinate professionals or staff.
Alternately, a Masters’ degree will be accepted in lieu of one year of the non-supervisory experience; a Ph.D. will be
accepted in lieu of three years of the required non-supervisory experience. A Professional Engineering or Geologist
license in New York State will also be similarly considered

Duties Description The Environmental Protection Bureau in the New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking an environmental scientist to conduct, manage and oversee scientific and technical investigations and analyses in support of litigation and policy initiatives. The scientist will join a multi-disciplinary science staff supervised by a Chief Scientist and a Deputy Bureau Chief. Superior scientific, management, planning, judgment and communication skills are required, as the position involves scientific and technical support for Bureau activities, including investigations, legal actions, negotiations, potential legislative initiatives, and formulations of policy where science, law and public policy intersect. Training and experience in one or more of the following areas is required: public health, community health, epidemiology, data analyses, risk assessment, toxicology, and modeling. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. Applicants who enjoy the challenge of working on a wide range of projects are highly desirable.

•Assess health and environmental risks associated with environmental exposure to pollutants, evaluate and propose remedial measures;
•Locate, retain and supervise consulting and testifying experts;

•Prepare memos, reports and affidavits and assist attorneys on scientific and technical issues, and interface with client agencies;
•Conduct investigations in support of OAG initiatives;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Familiarity with Geographic Information System (GIS) applications;
• Working knowledge of statistics as applied to public and community health;
• Comfort and enthusiasm about working outside of your area of expertise.

HOURS OF WORK: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Dependent on OAG policy and subject to management discretion, this position has compressed work week and telecommuting options available. The candidate selected for this position must work in the New York City location (28 Liberty Street) of the Attorney General’s office 22.5 hours per week. Telecommuting may be permitted for up to 15 hours per week.
