Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field.

Substitutions: master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Laboratory experience in chemistry performing analyses for organic contaminants in environmental matrices. Experience with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) utilizing various sample introduction techniques, including automated direct injection and purge and trap. Knowledge of environmental laboratory standards and quality assurance/quality control. Ability to work independently, familiarity with Microsoft Excel for data analysis and evaluation, and excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Duties Description The incumbent in this position is responsible for support activities within the Laboratory of Organic Analytical Chemistry. Specific duties include the analysis of semi-volatile organic compounds in various environmental matrices by GC/MS using approved standard operating procedures, preparing calibration standards, maintaining instrumentation, performing data reduction and various quality assurance activities, maintaining and updating laboratory documentation, and other tasks as assigned. Additional duties may include providing analytical support for additional classes of organic contaminants using GC/MS and performing method development and validation, as needed.

Additional Comments Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required. Additionally, exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position; the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.
