Minimum Qualifications The examinations for this position have been announced and applications to take the exam must have been submitted to the Department of Civil Service by August 31, 2022.
If applying for provisional appointment: In order for you to be considered for a permanent/contingent permanent appointment, you must have applied for and completed the examination for this title, and your score must be high enough to qualify you as one of the top three acceptors on the resulting list. If you are not successful on the examination, or if your score is not high enough to be reachable for appointment, your employment in this title will not be allowed to continue.

Individuals appointed as a Geologist Trainee are required to complete a minimum of one year of successful performance as a Geologist Trainee and pass the National Association of State Boards of Geologist’s Fundamentals of Geology (FG)examination. If you pass the FG by the end of the first year, you may be advanced to the Grade 20 Assistant Geologist title without further examination. If you do not pass the FG by the end of the second year of the traineeship, you will be terminated from your position.


Geologist Trainee:
Either 1: a bachelor’s degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology,
environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science,
geophysics, or hydrogeology.
Or 2: Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of
Geology (FG) Examination AND one year of full-time experience in Economic Geology, Hydrogeology,
Environmental Geology or Engineering Geology.

Assistant Geologist:
Either 1: Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) examination AND a bachelor's degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology
Or 2: Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Examination AND one year of full-time experience in Economic Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Geology or Engineering Geology.
Or 3: A professional geologist licensure with current registration.

Duties Description The successful candidate will serve as a project manager in Remedial Bureau C, Section E. Two positions are available. Duties include a significant level of field oversight/construction inspection for site investigations, remediations and long-term site management, as well as overall project management for remedial sites in the Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP), State Superfund (SSF) and Brownfield Cleanup (BCP) programs. MGP sites are located statewide, while the BCP and SSF sites are primarily located in Region 3. This includes review of work plans, investigation reports, remedial designs, corrective action plans, remedy closure documents (including construction completion reports, final engineering reports, and as-builts/record drawings), long-term site management and associated administrative requirements to ensure conformance with current/best available remedial technologies, applicable rules, regulations, standards, guidance, and policies. The candidate will be expected to manage multiple priorities to address site needs. This position requires extensive travel (80-100%) throughout the State, with a primary focus on MGP sites. This position requires the use of an air purifying respirator (Level C) over the hazard duty differential of at least 30 days a year for an hour or more per day for each of those 30 days (typical use is higher than this threshold). Use of other Level C personal protective equipment (PPE) is required as appropriate. As such, annual medical monitoring and training in the proper use of PPE, as well as demonstrated proficiency in the use of numerous field testing/ monitoring equipment and sampling techniques are required. The position requires the ability to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including representatives of other Department divisions, other State and Federal agencies, potentially responsible parties, consultants, local officials, and the public, as well as environmental consultants and contractors. Must have efficient verbal and written communication skills. Additional duties will be discussed during interviews. Include the following when applying for the position: resume, college transcript, and proof of submitting the Assistant Geologist or Geologist Trainee exam to the Department of Civil Service. Submit proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) examination, or proof of professional geologist licensure if
applicable.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must successfully complete (or have completed) the 40-hour OSHA 1910.120 training course and all other required training. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 60 pounds.
