Minimum Qualifications "Grade 14: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related field, and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.
Grade 18: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related field, and two years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in one of the above fields and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field."
Preferred Qualifications:
Work experience or coursework in statistics, health services, or research design. Experience performing research and analyses with large administrative and/or clinical data sets. Experience summarizing and presenting research findings. Proficiency in SAS and/or SQL programming, Tableau, mapping software, and Microsoft Office software applications including Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word. Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Working knowledge of reproductive health and abortion services, and reproductive justice and health equity.
Duties Description The Assistant Research Scientist / Research Scientist 1 in this position will work within the Bureau of Research, Epidemiology and Evaluation and will assist in a broad range of research, analysis, reporting, and evaluation activities related to the NYS Comprehensive Reproductive Health and Family Planning Program (NYS FPP) or NYS Safe and Supportive Medical and Procedural Abortion Access Program (NYS SSMPAAS). Under direction of higher-level researchers, the Research Scientist will access, analyze, and understand public health surveillance data, such as the family planning client visit record, vital statistics and hospital discharge data, that can be used to identify areas in need of investments (i.e., gaps) and to evaluate the effectiveness of state investments in reproductive health. This individual will participate in all phases of research, including literature review, methods development, statistical analysis, data analytics related to data robustness and quality, continuous quality improvement, and the development of written reports and presentation of findings. The Research Scientist will monitor access to providers, service provision and outcomes among NYS and out-of-state residents; conduct analyses to measure and track progress toward improvements in selected indicators; develop, produce, and interpret benchmark reports to monitor, assess and communicate progress toward improvement of the initiatives; and provide direct technical assistance to providers as needed. The Research Scientist will also participate in other bureau and departmental research-related activities and groups. If appointed as an Assistant Research Scientist, the incumbent will assist other research staff with these duties; if appointed as a Research Scientist 1, the incumbent will be expected to perform these duties under general supervision.
Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, full-time appointment. Appointment level will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (5%).
