Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service law.

NOTE: Engineering Traineeship Program: As an Engineer Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20. To advance to Assistant Engineer, you must have obtained proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and successfully completed the requirements of the traineeship to the satisfaction of the appointing authority. At the discretion of the appointing authority, early advancement to Assistant Engineer is possible if you have obtained your FE and have successfully completed twelve months of the traineeship. It is your responsibility to notify the appointing authority’s personnel office upon obtaining proof of passing the FE. You may receive an increase in salary upon obtaining your FE. Information about this increase will be provided by the appointing authority.

Duties Description The incumbent will be assigned to the Traffic Operations Unit in Region 7 Traffic Safety & Mobility. Under the supervision of the Regional Traffic Operations Supervisor, job duties may include, but not limited to:

Conducting Operational Studies including the review of traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings; performing field measurements (sight distance, sign sizes, etc.); observations (pedestrian counts, intersections, etc.) and reviews (intersections, marked crosswalks, trails, and other Traffic Operation Studies); preparing and submitting Official Orders; conducting speed studies as needed for operational studies and the capital program; reviewing operational cases involving crash history reviews and providing recommendations for consideration of possible solutions regarding each case or concern; preparing responses to inquiries received from Federal, State, Local Agencies, and individuals; providing assistance to the Traffic Signal Unit, Safety Evaluation Unit and Permit Unit for tasks that are deemed necessary and critical for timely completion by the Regional Traffic Engineer; and cross training with other Traffic units will be expected.

This position will include field work and occasional overnight travel throughout the Region. In addition, this position’s specific requirement will be discussed at the time of the interview. At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to meet the travel requirements of the position either by possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or access to reliable transportation..

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
