Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have seven years of experience inspecting and testing metals and welds for structural steel fabrication in fabrication shops and/or field, including experience in performing and interpreting ultrasonic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant and hardness tests and interpreting radiographs, one year of which must be been in supervising a structural metals quality assurance programs requiring the verification of above inspection and test activities when performed by subordinates.
Appointees must obtain NYS Department of Transportation Certification as an ultrasonic testing technician within one year of permanent appointment.
A Bachelor's degree in mechanical, metallurgical, or welding engineering or engineering trechnology may be substituted for four years of the nonsupervisory experience.
If appointed provisional, appointee must take, pass and be reachable on the next Materials Testing Specialist 2 exam.
Duties Description Performs ultrasonic testing (UT) on weldments and plates successfully to properly locate and documents flaws related to welding and manufacturing errors; coordinates repair activities pertaining to impact and naturally occurring structural damage; reviews proposed contract plans and specifications during all stages of contract development for issues of constructability, clarity and conformance to the Authority established design an quality standards, ensures that necessary nondestructive testing is clearly specified; reviews and approves shop drawings for structural steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum components required for the replacement, repair and rehab of bridges, structures, sign structures, building, etc., for compliance to contract documents and quality workmanship requirements; performs quality assurance activities; and performs, reviews, evaluates, and documents the results of NDT performed by contractor quality control inspectors and inspection agencies working directly for the Authority. These tests include radiographic test (RT), Ultrasonic Test (UT) reports, and Rockwell Hardness Testing.
