Minimum Qualifications A bachelors degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree, AND at least two years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a Master’s degree in one of the above fields, AND at least one year of post-degree professional research experience.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have a graduate degree in Public/Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Social/Behavioral/Environmental Sciences, or a closely related field. The preferred candidate will have experience with SAS/R, MS Office including Access & Excel, and/or other database management software; environmental, occupational, and/or reproductive epidemiologic research; public health surveillance; and electronic medical records. They will have a demonstrated proficiency in the collection, management, linkage, and analysis of environmental and human health data; experience with data quality improvement; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills; strong attention to detail; knowledge of birth defects and medical coding; and experience working with databases and large datasets.
Duties Description This position is in the Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology. The incumbent will participate in all phases of epidemiological research and surveillance, including problem definition, study design, acquiring and managing relevant data, statistical/spatial/temporal analyses, summarizing findings, interpreting and sharing results, and preparing grant proposals, reports, and publications. Other responsibilities will include surveillance of birth defects through existing and new methods; assisting with development of new surveillance methods; the collection, processing, and management of relevant data from hospitals, providers, Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs), and other relevant sources; and performing quality assurance and control checks using SAS and Excel. They will also interact with hospital reporting staff, members of the public, and the scientific community.
Additional Comments Contingent permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (10%).
