Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law.

Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.

The minimum requirements for taking the Junior Landscape Architect examination are:

Either 1. a bachelor’s or higher-level degree in landscape architecture.

Or 2. a Landscape Architect’s License from any state or political subdivision of the United States.

*Note: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university with a Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB) accredited curriculum, a Canadian Society of Landscape Architects Accreditation Council (CSLAAC),or by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable practices.

*Junior Landscape Architects who have successfully completed one year of service and have passed Sections 1 and 2 of the Landscape Architect Registration examination (LARE) will be advanced to Landscape Architect, Grade 20. Failure to obtain a passing result on both Section 1 & 2 of the LARE within the first year of service will result in removal from your position.

Duties Description Under the direction of a higher-level supervisor/manager, the duties of the Landscape Architect may include, but are not limited to:

Provide Landscape Architecture design and support services on capital and maintenance projects involving transportation facilities. Review projects for landscape and environmental impacts and prepare associated documents to support environmental process determinations. Prepare plans, specifications, and estimates for the landscape, erosion and sediment control, compensatory wetland mitigation, grading, drainage, bicycle and pedestrian facilities and storm water quality management portions of highway, culvert, and bridge projects. Coordinate the landscape development and site work with engineering and architectural work in planning, design, and construction phases. Provide technical assistance and advice to project staff and management in the areas of landscape architecture, bicycle and pedestrian facility design, accessible design, and Americans with Disabilities (ADA) compliance, vegetation management, and erosion control to other functional groups such as: Highway Maintenance, Construction, Planning and Program Management, Right of Way, Traffic and Safety, and Highway Permits office. Advise Design, Construction, Highway Maintenance, and other functional groups on environmental rules and regulations. Prepare landscape architectural renderings and presentation material for public meetings. Evaluate projects proposed by local governments, developers, and organizations for their impact on adjacent State properties and the need for environmental analysis and approval. Prepare, deliver, and/or review landscape architecture and environmental documentation, correspondence, guidance, and training. Prepare permit applications, secure permits, and monitor permit compliance. Potentially perform occasional GPS data collection and/or wetland delineation. Utilize various software tools such as MicroStation CAD, Arc-GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, and others, to perform necessary work assignments.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
