Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license. This position will require the incumbent to exercise a great deal of independent judgment in handling and resolving issues as they occur.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department is seeking candidates for a Driver and Confidential Aide position in the Office of the Commissioner. Under the supervision of the Commissioner of Education, the incumbent of this position will work in a confidential capacity with the Commissioner and provide administrative support, both while in the office and while the Commissioner is in travel status. The incumbent will plan and coordinate the logistics of the Commissioner’s travel schedule and maintain the Commissioner’s work flow while travelling. Duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Coordinates and plans the travel logistics for the Commissioner, and occasionally for other members of the Executive Staff and members of the Board of Regents;
• Provides driver services to the Commissioner, members of the Executive Staff and members of the Board of Regents;
• Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor;
• Completes and submits accurate travel expense documentation for timely reimbursement, as assigned;
• Ensures that the Commissioner’s motor vehicle is clean and in excellent working order and that all necessary repairs and maintenance are handled in a timely manner and coordinated with the Commissioner’s travel schedule;
• Organizes the Commissioner’s travel schedule and works closely with the Commissioner’s Secretary to ensure that required and necessary materials and information are prepared and organized for the Commissioner’s trips;
• Coordinates the Commissioner’s work flow while traveling, by ensuring that all materials and documents needed are accurate, correct, organized and readily available to the Commissioner for meetings and conferences;
• Communicates with Executive Staff and other individuals to transmit communications, instructions and assignments from the Commissioner or to gather information or materials for the Commissioner;
• Conducts research on matters of interest to the Commissioner;
• Prepares reports as requested by the Commissioner;
• Answers and responds to telephone calls the Commissioner receives while traveling. Prioritizes all messages and e-mails, works with SED staff as necessary to gather, compile and coordinate information necessary for the Commissioner to respond to telephone calls or e-mail messages;
• Schedules meetings as necessary; and
• Responds to emails and telephone calls for the Commissioner, as assigned.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is in the exempt class and the incumbent will serve at the pleasure of the Commissioner of Education. Travel is expected to be 80-100% of this position and hours are determined by the schedule of the Commissioner of Education.
