Minimum Qualifications Assistant Research Scientist (Epidemiology), Grade 14: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree and one year of post degree professional research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.
Research Scientist 1 (Epidemiology), Grade 18: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree and two years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master's degree in one of the above fields and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field.
Research Scientist 2 (Epidemiology) , Grade 22: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree and three years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master's degree in one of the above field and two years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a doctoral degree in one of the above fields.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have a graduate degree in Epidemiology or another public health field; working knowledge of public health/epidemiological surveillance systems; strong written, methodological, and analytical skills with proficiency in statistical programs (e.g. SAS) and Microsoft Office products, including Access and Excel; knowledge of food safety issues in public health and experience with foodborne disease investigations; experience implementing research studies, analyzing program data, preparing written documentation, and interpreting results; experience developing
training materials and providing trainings and presentations; and experience in preparing grant applications and manuscripts for publication.
Duties Description Under the direction of a higher-level Research Scientist, the
selected candidate will design, direct, and lead epidemiologic studies and surveillance activities. They will participate in research
activities; provide oversight and coordination of technical,
administrative, and public health activities of public health
surveillance systems; monitor complaint system data; coordinate
responses to illness complaints and coordinate outbreak
reporting; and serve as an information source to staff and others
on research projects, outbreak investigations, and other
surveillance activities. The incumbent will serve as a
member of research teams, work with federal and State
agencies in coordinating epidemiological investigations, and
participate in work groups and conference calls regarding high priority
epidemiological studies. The incumbent will work with
considerable independence, and may supervise, provide
technical support, and train subordinate professional staff.
Additional Comments Permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Appointment
level will be determined based on the qualifications of the
selected candidate. Occasional travel throughout New York State
to areas not served by public transportation may be required
(5%).
