Minimum Qualifications • Candidates must be a high school graduate or have a high school equivalency diploma and one year of experience as a dispatcher in an emergency service organization. Examples of Qualifying Experience: police, fire and emergency medical dispatching (civilian or military experience is acceptable)
• Candidates must pass a physical and medical evaluation including drug test and psychological evaluation to determine fitness to perform the essential duties of the position. • Candidates must successfully pass a background investigation and will be required to pay the processing fees for fingerprinting.

*Candidates will be appointed provisionally and will be required
to take and pass the Civil Service Examination for Communications Technician 1, G-10, to be appointed permanently.

Duties Description OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must be able to operate and perform duties under varying degrees of stress and pressure and be able to prioritize emergencies
• Must have strong communications skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse community
• Must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays and be flexible with the schedule
• Candidates must have the ability to effectively engage in all types of communications
• Must be able to navigate various software technologies including those associated with law enforcement applications and internet-based websites and have excellent data entry skills

DUTIES:
• Receive and transmit police messages via radio, telephone, and teletype.
• Maintain logs, records and written documents required by the Division of Law Enforcement.
• Maintain professional and composed verbal communication with outside police agencies and the public; maintaining sound customer service practices and meeting the needs of the Agency under sometimes stressful conditions is essential.
• This position operates an extensive array of law enforcement and emergency related communications equipment as well as computer software.
• Prioritize all radio and telephone communications. Answer multiple telephone lines. Receive emergency and non-emergency calls for law enforcement and dispatch patrols to respond.
• Make urgent and important decisions regarding emergency situations based on knowledge, skills and policies and procedures.
• Service all walk-in customers.
• Perform administrative duties such as data entry and retrieval, information filing and record keeping.
• Comply with all Federal, State and Local regulations relative to communications and protected data and information.
• Other duties as assigned.

Additional Comments The posted hiring rate is the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 10 ($41,255) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,026). The posted job rate is the sum of the statutory job rate ($50,628) for CSEA Grade 10 and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,026).
