Minimum Qualifications For Permanent Appointment: Candidates must currently be employed as an Assistant Architect and be eligible for transfer or must be reachable on the Assistant Architect eligible list.

Current NYS Employees - Provisional Appointment:
You must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had at least one year of permanent competitive or 55b/55c service as a Junior Architect, Principal Drafting Technician (all parenthetics), Assistant Architectural Specifications Writer, Junior Architectural Estimator, or Assistant Architectural Estimator; OR

Non-NYS Employees - Provisional Appointment by Open Competitive Qualifications:
Either 1: six years of architectural experience in design or drafting on buildings requiring multi-discipline trade involvement such as heating, plumbing, and electric. This experience must have been under the direction of a registered architect or professional engineer. Qualifying experience includes work performed on institutional, commercial, healthcare, academic, office, or residential (excluding single family or duplex family homes) buildings. You must explain your level of involvement;

Or 2: an associate's degree in architecture, architectural technology, construction technology, civil engineering technology, or drafting technology with an emphasis on architecture AND four years of architectural design or drafting experience under the direction of a registered architect or professional engineer as described in #1 above.

Or 3: a four-year bachelor's degree in architectural/structural engineering studies AND two years of architectural design or drafting experience under the direction of a registered architect or professional engineer as described in #1 above.

Or 4: a five-year bachelor's degree in architectural studies or a master's degree in architectural studies AND one year of architectural design or drafting experience under the direction of a registered architect as described in #1 above.

Or 5: Architect's license, with current registration, from any state or territory of the United States.

NOTE: In order to be permanently appointed, the provisional employee must obtain a score that is reachable on the resulting eligible list. Candidates with provisional status who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained in the position.

Duties Description Under the direction of the District Manager and/or senior staff, the Assistant Architect will perform a wide range of architectural duties such as;
• Perform project management on construction projects, including submittal reviews, preparation of change orders, and onsite inspections, check for accuracy and conformity to the drawings and specifications;
• Maintain meeting minutes and project records; preparation and drafting of preliminary through final architectural plans including elevations, sections, construction details, related specifications and cost estimates, based on project program requirements and in accordance with the Capital Plan.
• Procure work under $50,000; prepare RFQ, distribute, respond to questions, select lowest bidder and receive insurance certificates;
• As needed, work with other Capital Unit staff on procuring larger projects;
• Review consultant progress drawings, specifications, and evaluate submittals for completeness, design conformity and NY State code compliance; prepare scope of work/work order and other document drafts;
• Prepare written reports and conceptual sketches for proposed projects; meet with facility managers, maintenance staff, program staff, regional management, and other stakeholders to solicit input, exchange ideas, and provide expertise;
• Collaborate with engineers, landscape architects, architects, other professional staff, and term consultants; and other related duties as assigned.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Candidates must possess effective communication skills and have the ability to understand written and/or verbal material and instructions.
• Daytime, weekend, holiday and evening work may be required.
• The appointee will work in the 5 boroughs of the NYC region and must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license as a term and condition of employment.
• The following experience, skills, and characteristics are highly desirable: working knowledge of applicable codes, laws, rules and standards; working knowledge of principles, practice and procedures of architecture and field work; working knowledge of building materials and construction methods; experience preparing and reviewing construction documents and specifications; ability to work independently; effective verbal and written communication skills; good organizational skills and the ability to work well as part of a team. Basic graphic design skills are a plus.
• Candidate is expected to have proficiency in Autocad, Excel, Word and Microsoft Outlook. Proficiency in 3d modeling software, graphic software (Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) and rendering capabilities are a plus.
• Work schedule may vary depending on agency needs and project completion dates.
