Duties Description The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in the Long Island Region is seeking a Parks and Recreation 5 to support the Division of Environmental Stewardship in Long Island.

Background & Mission of the Program:
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYS OPRHP) is seeking resumes of qualified individuals to support the Division of Enviornmental Stewardship in Long Island. To ensure public safety, State Park beaches are monitored at least once per week during the swimming season to ensure protection of public health. The individual selected will interact with a highly experienced team of professionals and will participate in water quality sampling, monitoring, and other stewardship related tasks. Funded by the BEACH Act grant, this position will be located on Long Island and collect bathing beach water samples from Long Island State Parks. The main purposes are to (1) coordinate the Long Island water quality monitoring program and (2) meet state and federal laws regarding monitoring and notification.

Locations: Position is based out of Connetquot River State Park Preserve. Routine beach monitoring to occur Monday and Tuesday. Sampling may also be needed on Wednesday - Friday in certain situations following exceedances, rainfall, or other unique circumstances. Samples will be collected at the following State Park beaches: Wildwood, Sunken Meadow, Heckscher, and Hither Hills. Samples will also be collected at Montauk Downs pools.

Under the supervision of higher-level personnel, the Seasonal Worker may be engaged in the performance of, but not limited to, the following tasks and activities:
• Collect water quality samples from Long Island Region beaches and pools and deliver samples to PACE Analytical laboratory in Melville, NY.
• Coordinate resampling and rainfall monitoring with lab and parks.
• Complete sampling field reports and lab paperwork.
• Enter field reporting and rainfall data and ensure submission to the Albany Water Quality Unit.
• Complete regional or park operational/stewardship tasks in afternoons and on most Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Performance of water quality sample collection

Other tasks are assigned as needed to support new projects and individual professional development.

Additional Comments Duration and Salary: Position available from May through September 2023.

Operational Requirements:
• Must possess Driver’s license with a clean driving record and reliable transportation to and from work locations.
• Able to follow standard operating procedures.
• Able to work outdoors in extreme conditions (long hours, inclement weather, heat, humidity, cold, biting insects).
• Perform work on unpaved, uneven surfaces (tripping hazards).
• Perform work in, on, and around water (rivers, lakes, oceans, etc.).
• Must be able to stand, bend, sit, lift, and drive.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

The ideal candidate possesses the following qualifications:
• Experience performing water quality sampling.
• Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills with attention to detail.
• Microsoft Office experience is preferred.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work early hours and interact with the public professionally.
• Excellent communication, data management, technical writing, and creative problem-solving skills.
• Completed or pursuing a degree in biology, environmental science, natural resources, or related field is preferred.
