Minimum Qualifications Permanent Minimum Qualifications: Current permanent status as a Senior Recreation Therapist and qualified for lateral transfer ~OR~ Eligible for transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law ~OR~ One-year permanent competitive service as a Recreation Therapist and reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list.

Provisional Minimum Qualifications:
You must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Recreation Therapist, Recreation Therapist (Spanish Language), Recreation Therapist (Art), Recreation Therapist (Dance), or Recreation Therapist (Music).
OR
Either 1. a master’s degree in therapeutic recreation, creative arts therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, or drama therapy;

Or 2. a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation, creative arts therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, or drama therapy, AND one year of post-degree professional experience* in planning and administering a therapeutic program which involved developing and coordinating therapeutic activities for geriatric patients/residents, individuals with developmental disabilities, individuals with psychiatric disabilities, individuals who are physically challenged, or individuals in treatment for alcoholism and substance abuse;

Or 3. a bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, adaptive physical education, art, dance, music, drama, recreation education with a concentration in therapeutic recreation, or recreation and leisure studies with a concentration in therapeutic recreation AND two years of post-degree professional experience as described above*;

Or 4. have one year of post-degree professional experience as described above* AND be one of the following:
a. certified as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); or
b. registered with the American Art Therapy Association as an Art Therapist; or
c. registered with the American Dance Therapy Association as a Dance Therapist; or
d. certified by the American Music Therapy Association as a Music Therapist; or
e. registered by the National Association for Drama Therapy as a Registered Drama Therapist.

*Substitution: A master’s degree in adaptive physical education, art, dance, music, drama, recreation education with a concentration in therapeutic recreation, or recreation and leisure studies with a concentration in therapeutic recreation may be substituted for one year of the post-degree professional experience described above.

To be eligible for permanent/contingent permanent appointment, candidates not currently on the eligible list must take the Civil Service examination for this title and be reachable on the resulting eligible list. Duties Description The Senior Recreation Therapist will be responsible for independently developing, implementing, and delivering recreation therapy services to individuals with substance use disorders and mental health conditions. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
• Provide a variety of recreation services to individuals and groups, and modify activities consistent with the function level, physical ability, and/or rehabilitative and clinical needs of individuals.
• Review and evaluate program effectiveness and recommending program changes or specialized activities as needed.
• Attend and participate in treatment plan review sessions providing input as relates to the program participants participation in recreational activities and general participation in the environment.
• Maintain individuals’ records and documentation in accordance with program standards and requirements.
• Arrange for and provide transportation to meet the needs of the facility and recreational activities.
• Maintain recreational supplies and equipment to include researching the purchase of new equipment and acting as point person with contractors and suppliers in the maintenance of equipment.
• Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of recreation therapy policies and procedures.
• Provide supportive counseling and crisis intervention as needed.
• May supervise subordinate staff engaged in the design, development, and/or delivery of recreation therapy services.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Mandatory overtime (MOT) is a requirement of this position. Chosen candidate(s) will be added to the mandatory overtime roster, which is utilized on a rotating basis. The MOT is applied during times of emergency, when all other staffing options have been exhausted (volunteers, hourly staff, contracted staff). Our Addiction Treatment Centers (ATCs) operate 24/7/365 programing. Therefore, MOT IS an essential function of this position and is critical to maintaining adequate staffing at all times in order to ensure the health and safety of clients within the facility.

$57,984 - $73,813*
*Plus Inconvenience Pay $575
*Plus Location Pay $3,026

Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
