Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.

The minimum requirements for taking the examination are:

Promotional:

You must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Transportation and have had three months of permanent non-competitive service as a Bridge Repair Mechanic, Trades Specialist (Bridge), or Bridge Repair Assistant.

Only the title or titles listed are qualifying.

After one year of the service described in the Minimum
Qualifications, successful candidates will be qualified for appointment from the eligible list.

Open Competitive:

Either 1. three years of experience in the construction, reconstruction, maintenance, rehabilitation, or inspection of bridges, highways, roadways, or waterways;*

Or 2. an associate’s or higher degree in construction or engineering technology AND one year of the experience as described above;*

Or 3. a diploma or certificate of completion in carpentry, masonry, welding, or construction from a post-secondary trade school, apprenticeship program, or military construction specialty school** AND one year of the experience described above.*

*Experience in construction of sewers, parking lots, and buildings will NOT be considered qualifying experience.

**NOTE: Acceptable military training may include documented completion of United States Army 14-Week Corp of Engineers “Field 12”, United States Navy Construction Force “A” and United States Navy Construction Force “C” schools “Navy Seabees”, United States Marine Corps Combat Engineers “MOS1371” school, or United States Air Force Civil Engineer Force “Prime BEEF” or “RED HORSE” training. Training schools must accompany one follow-on duty station in said field.

Important: High school BOCES or VO-TECH courses are NOT qualifying.

Candidates must possess a valid New York State Class A or Class B Commercial’s Driver’s License with no air brake restriction, at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
Appointees will be required to satisfactorily complete a “one-person plowing” certification program which the Department of Transportation will offer during the probationary period.

Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal from employment.

Duties Description Duties Description:

A Bridge Repair Supervisor 1 functions both as an overall assistant supervisor in the Bridge Repair Crew overseeing and inspecting the work of the Bridge Repair Crews for adherence to standards and instructions and as a working supervisor of a sub-crew involved in extensive bridge repair projects.
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Reporting to the BRS2, the BRS1 will assist a Bridge Repair Supervisor 2 including supervising bridge repair crews.

• Oversee, direct and work with crew in performance of repair work to ensure instructions, plans, work standards, and safety procedures are followed.

• Act as overall supervisor in the absence of the Bridge Repair Supervisor 2.

• Review and inspect completed projects to ensure work was performed properly.

• Determine the need for additional repair and maintenance work due to unforeseen problems.

• Arrange for additional material and equipment to complete work.

• Prepare daily work activity reports in MMS for each crew and repair projects including manpower, materials and equipment used for each project, and any unexpected developments or delay with explanation.

• Use and operate machinery, tools and equipment. This includes but not limited to: jackhammers, drills, welding equipment, scaffolding, under bridge inspection equipment, concrete mixers, sandblasters, construction and highway equipment, and hand tools.

• The candidate shall be required to perform snow and ice operations and may supervise a snow and ice crew. Must be able to report to call outs within one hour.

• Candidate will also be required to answer emergency calls outside of regular hours of work.

• Overtime response and shift work are requirements for this job; therefore, use of vacation and personal leaves are limited during the winter but may be approved during the summer.

Candidates will be required to be included in the department’s written respiratory protection program.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

The starting salary for this position is $62,262. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $53,262 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
