Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in music or Master of Arts in Music and Music Education AND a valid NYS teaching certificate in Music AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with blind/visually impaired students and/or students with various disabling conditions.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for an Instructor (Music) position in the New York State School for the Blind. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Plan and implement lessons modifying instruction to meet the educational needs of students;
• Provide 1:1 instrumental and vocal lessons to students as deemed beneficial to support instruction;
• Use assistive technology where appropriate to support instructional delivery;
• Develop and implement assessment tools and rubrics;
• Provide quarterly report card information;
• Collaborate with classroom teachers;
• Teach general styles of music;
• Teach classical piano, practical and theory;
• Teach singing to students from beginner to advanced level;
• Incorporate musical instruments and movement in lessons;
• Encourage music appreciation;
• Instruct students in the technical aspects of music and performance;
• Assess students' abilities, strengths, and weaknesses;
• Adapt lessons to changes in class size;
• Lead rehearsals for musical programs and prepare students for school concerts and
planned music experiences; and
• Build relationships and mentor student.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent, 10-month position. Salary is commensurate with highest level of education conferred and is subject to verification. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree and/or transcripts and NYS teaching certificate in Music will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. Candidates are required to possess NYS teaching certificate in Music at the time of hire. Continued employment as an Instructor is dependent upon maintaining New York State teaching certification in Special Education. Candidates with an Initial NYS teaching certificate in Music will be required to obtain a NYS teaching certificate in Music prior to the expiration of the NYS teaching certificate in Music. Failure to maintain a NYS teaching certificate in Music will result in removal from employment. The work schedule for this position will be Monday thru Friday, 7:30 am – 3:00 pm.

This position leads to a maximum salary of $73,058- $93,156 based on annual performance advances.
