Minimum Qualifications Public Health Physician 2 (PHP 2): possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State,
board-eligible or board certification in a medical specialty, and either a master’s degree
in Public Health, or one year of experience in a public health program.
Public Health Physician 3 (PHP 3): possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State, board
certification in a medical specialty, and either a master’s degree in Public Health, or two
years of experience in a public health program.
Preferred Qualifications: "Experience in public health, preventive medicine, environmental health, or communicable disease, within a health department, academic, or clinical setting. Education or other substantial training and work experience in epidemiology. Familiarity with health systems, population health, clinical practice, and environmental medicine.
and/or Fellowship in Applied Public Health; experience in environmental and/or occupation medicine"
Duties Description The Public Health Physician 2 or 3 (PHP 2/3) will function as the medical director for the Office of Public Health (OPH). The position will provide leadership, guidance, and collaboration across the OPH centers, divisions, bureaus, and offices; coordinate OPH participation in cross health department efforts to foster innovation and initiatives at the intersection of clinical practice and public health, including health insurance (public and private), health systems, quality and patient safety, social determinants of health, advancing health equity, and information systems.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following: provide clinical and public health direction to prevention and control of chronic conditions, prevention and control of communicable diseases, and safety and protection of human health from environmental settings. Contribute to policy and program development to achieve OPH and health department goals for improving health in New York State. Convene and establish partnerships internally and externally with health system members, community providers, local health departments, residents, community representatives, academic institutions, and other stakeholders. Provide clinical and public health oversight in development of agency-wide approaches for disease surveillance, evaluation, quality improvement, emerging conditions, social determinants of health, health disparities and equity, and environmental contaminants. Develop and/or contribute to scientific studies, analyses, reports and manuscripts for publication. Provide clinical advice, guidance, and direction on OPH-specific programs, including design and implementation, standards, metrics, monitoring and evaluation, demographic characteristics, among others. Contribute to training, technical assistance and capacity building on OPH-related programs, in particular with health care providers. Participate in state, county, and regional committees and other settings to promote collaboration, programmatic and scientific exchange, and advancing Department of Health mission and goals.
Additional Comments "*Hiring salary is $219,376 for PHP2 (G38) or $232,778 for PHP3 (M8), depemdemt upon nomination. This position may be filled in Albany or at one of our regional offices depending on selected candidate.
In consideration of priorities and workload, the Public Health Physician position:
• May include travel, including overnights, to areas not served by public transportation.
• May include extended hours, sometimes with limited notice to meet operational needs; this may include evenings and/or weekends.
