Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biology, Infection Control, Biomedical Science, Statistics/Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a closely related degree and four years of professional post-degree scientific research experience; or a Master’s degree in one of the above mentioned fields and three years of post-degree professional scientific research; or a Doctorate in one of the above mentioned fields and one year of post-degree professional scientific research.
Preferred Qualifications: PhD in Epidemiology (or a related field) and 3+ years of extensive experience, or Master’s degree and 5 years of post-master’s degree experience, in cancer registry, epidemiologic methods, cancer epidemiology, and/or cancer surveillance. Advanced knowledge of database software and statistical programming packages, particularly SAS, R, relational databases, SEER*Stat, “big data” analytics and SQL. Experience in the design, development, management, and analysis of large data files and data linkages. Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS), spatial analysis and experience with data visualization is preferred. Experience in presenting to professional and lay audiences. The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Strong organizational skills and experience in supervising professional staff.
Duties Description This position is assigned to the Bureau of Cancer Epidemiology and the successful applicant will serve as full member/co-leader of research and/or surveillance projects, with major responsibilities for all phases of a project, including study design, data manipulation, statistical analyses, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. The incumbent will serve as liaison between external researchers and the Bureau, and manage the research projects tracking database. Under the general direction of a senior Research Scientist, the incumbent will work in close collaboration with cancer registry staff and lead the implementation of best practices for complete and timely ascertainment of cancer cases. The incumbent will oversee program evaluation and performance measurement of cancer reporting by facilities, labs, and physicians' offices to the New York State Department of Health. The incumbent will develop data acquisition, integration, and visualization applications. The incumbent will lead the quality assessment of descriptive cancer statistics and reports prepared by the Bureau. The incumbent will participate on statewide/national committees and work groups important to the fields of cancer epidemiology and cancer surveillance. The incumbent will direct and mentor junior level research scientists and support staff in the conduct of research or surveillance projects.
