Minimum Qualifications G31 - Doctorate in the natural sciences and three years of professional post-degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's Degree and five years of such experience.
Preferred Qualifications: A doctorate in the physical sciences (inorganic chemistry; analytical chemistry; nuclear chemistry or related field), and ten years of experience managing a successful research team with external funding as a principal investigator.
The ideal incumbent will have a solid track record of peer-reviewed publications in the inorganic or nuclear chemistry field, with a national reputation equivalent to the academic rank of Associate or Full Professor. Specific areas of research could be either: nuclear chemistry, environmental chemistry, or inorganic analytical chemistry, as long as there is a strong connection to public health, i.e., effects of inorganic contaminants (toxic metals, asbestos and/or radioactive isotopes) on human health.
Duties Description A Research Scientist 5 is needed to support the Laboratory of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry (LINC) and to assume a leadership role as Deputy Lab Chief. The LINC is a fully accredited laboratory within the Division of Environmental Health Sciences (DEHS) at the Wadsworth Center, where skilled staff perform analyses of various inorganic contaminants in water, air, solid waste, and food, as well as the analysis of biological tissues and fluids (blood, urine, bone) for toxic metals/metalloids. The incumbent would assist with day-to-day oversight of the accredited environmental testing labs in LINC and supervise/mentor junior staff, as well as work towards establishing a world-class research program supported by external funding and assist in leading LINC. Research areas of interest include inorganic mass spectrometry, inorganic analytical chemistry, human biomonitoring, environmental radioactivity, nuclear chemistry, X-ray spectrometry, and radio bioassay.

Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
