Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: bachelor’s degree in the Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field, or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and on year of post-degree professional research experience in that field.

Preferred Qualifications: Working knowledge of surveillance systems, preferably public health/epidemiology systems. Experience collecting and identifying arthropod specimens. Experience preparing and processing specimens for molecular analysis; proficiency in laboratory techniques such as nucleic acid extraction, real-time and conventional PCR, nucleic acid quantification, and sterile technique. Experience using various software packages, including Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Access as well as data analysis software such as SAS or R and GIS software. Excellent written and verbal communication skills including lead or co-author on manuscripts. Attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Duties Description The Research Scientist 1 will be responsible for assisting senior research staff with activities related to vector-borne diseases. The position is located in the Western Regional Office (WRO). The incumbent will assist with vector-borne disease surveillance and research activities as well as special studies to assess epidemiologic and environmental risk factors associated with tick- and mosquito-borne diseases. Responsibilities will include conducting vector surveillance and vector-borne disease surveillance; conducting scientific research studies; providing technical assistance and training; serving as a liaison/resource with local health departments, regional office and Central Office partners; and contributing to scientific literature through epidemiologic and vector surveillance activities. Additional activities include: utilizing a broad array of scientific techniques in collecting data including an evaluation of the validity and possible significance of the findings; preparing materials, methods, and results sections for manuscripts; and identifying and responding to urgent communicable disease outbreak and public health emergency issues.
