Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: Bachelor's degree in a Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Biostatistics, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related degree and five years of professional post-degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's Degree and four years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field and two years of such experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Preferred requirements include experience supervising and working with large statewide administrative relational databases such as the syndromic surveillance data system and fluency in SAS or related statistical software. Experience with the syndromic data system, public health experience, ability to effectively work independently as well as part of a team, experience with statistical analysis methodologies and SQL would be preferred. 

Duties Description The Research Scientist 4 (RS4) will be responsible for managing and directing the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) syndromic surveillance research, analysis, and evaluation team. The incumbent will supervise four other syndromic surveillance program staff in Bureau of Surveillance and Data Systems (BSDS). Syndromic surveillance has become a critical tool for responding to emergencies. In the last few years, new syndrome alerts were developed for COVID-19, polio, drug overdoses, and pediatric brain abscesses and were added to previously developed syndromes. This position will direct maintenance of the existing syndromes including program research, analytics, evaluation and creating data sets from the existing syndromes as well as oversee and develop new syndromes as required.
