Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in carpentry work under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) traineeship or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Duties Description Under the direction of Maintenance Supervisor 3, the Trades Specialist (Carpenter) may be engaged in the performance or coordination of the following activities, working from verbal or written descriptions or drawings and sketches. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Install and adjust door and building hardware, including locks, door closures, doorknobs, hinges, door checks, and sash fittings, as well as window installation and repair.
• The incumbent may design, plan layout, and construct a variety of structures, buildings, furniture, equipment, and architectural millwork, using wood and sometimes plastics, metals, and other materials.
• Incumbents may work with, lead, and provide practical trades instruction to others. Projects ranging from new construction to small repairs.
• As required, the incumbent may draw rough sketches or prepare plans to scale from the supervisor or written instructions to accomplish a project.
• Per task, the incumbent may make recommendations to the type, quantity, and quality of materials to be used. As well as planning tools and equipment needed to carry out the job effectively.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to follow written directions, record, and document required information, and communicate effectively.
• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and have knowledge of good safety practices.
• Must have the ability to read blueprints, plans, and drawings.
• Must have the ability to plan, layout, and complete various carpentry work.
• Must be proficient in the safe use and care of carpentry hand tools, power tools, wood shop equipment, and materials.
• Must be proficient in or have working knowledge in a wide variety of skills. Including but not limited to framing, roofing, siding, drywall installation/finishing, architectural millwork, trimwork, casework, and paint/finishing.
• Must have a working knowledge of historic preservation techniques, sensitivity to restoring, and caring for the original fabric of structures with minimal impact and lasting quality.
• Must possess knowledge of historic methods of woodworking and joinery to construct and repair wooden doors, window sash, frame/panels, as well as casework and furniture.
• Must be willing to work independently or as a team, and willing to travel daily to other facilities within the Saratoga/ Capital Region to carry out work duties.
• Willing to take mandated training for safety compliance, Lead Renovator certification, as well as elective training to further knowledge and skills within the trade.
• Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and/or materials of different weights and sizes.
• Ability to work from scaffolds and ladders, roofs, and from aerial lift devices.
• Must be able to supervise and instruct others in the construction and repair of structures and associated fixtures.
• Must be willing to keep up on all mandated safety training, including First Aid/CPR/AED
• Must obtain and maintain certification for lead testing and renovation. (Provided by Parks)
