Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using mapping programs such as ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, and Survey123
- Experience with the Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Access)
- Experience in working alone, outdoors in a forested setting
- Experience or coursework related to trail and recreation management, including knowledge of trail construction and maintenance practices, trail structures, and other associated facilities such as primitive campsites, lean-tos, and privies.
- Experience or coursework in forestry, natural resources management, recreation management or a related field including topics such as recreation management, dendrology, ecology, soils, forest health, geographic information systems (GIS).

Duties Description Assist Forest Preserve Foresters with vital administrative responsibilities and field work related to the management of Forest Preserve lands. Job duties would center on managing the impacts of public use and would primarily consist of work in the field collecting information about the condition and public use of trails, trailheads, parking areas, signage, campsites, and other recreation-related facilities. Information collected would be used to make informed decisions when planning short term, day-to-day management activities and thus allow the Department to respond more appropriately when allocating resources. The information would also allow for better planning when writing the Unit Management Plans that guide our long-term management of Forest Preserve.
Specific duties could include:
- Assisting with trail construction projects, routine maintenance, and trail marking
- Completing trail inspections and reports
- Inventorying assets and trails using GPS devices
- Updating State Land Assets and Transportation GIS layer files as needed
- Photo logging backcountry assets including vistas, campsites, signs, & other infrastructure
- Monitoring user impacts in high use areas
- Tallying trail register sheets and maintaining the trail register database
- Collecting data from trail counters
- Participating in volunteer projects, First Day Hikes, I Love My Park Day, and other events
- Creating maps for kiosks, webpages, and UMPs
- Working in high use areas as needed including cleaning up litter and monitoring parking lot flow

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.

This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2025, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
