Minimum Qualifications No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Completed college coursework in humanities and/or museum studies is preferred.
• Knowledge of Erie Canal, Indigenous peoples, and/or local history
• Experience working in a direct public-service setting is preferred.
Duties Description Under the direction of the Historic Site Manager (HSM), the selected candidate will be involved in every aspect of historic site interpretation and visitor services:
• Welcomes visitors to the historic site and museum, answers questions and offers guidance for visitors, answers telephones, and delivers tours.
• Assists the HSM and works independently to deliver tours, educational programming, informal interpretive contacts, written interpretive material, and environmental education.
• Assists in delivery of special events.
• Assists in general event set up and take down of tents, tables, chairs, PA system, and other necessary equipment as needed.
• Assists with museum maintenance duties including polishing plexi, dusting, sweeping, litter removal, and light cleaning.
• Assists in emergency situations by applying emergency procedures and practices. Maintains awareness to minimize potential problems.
• Operates register for the museum store and tour admissions.
• Collects and prepares daily attendance and revenue reports.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Ability to climb stairs and walk and stand for prolonged periods including over uneven terrain while interacting with the public.
• Must have excellent customer service skills and the ability to act as a customer service contact.
• Must have strong organizational skills, good attention to detail, and the ability to work well independently.
• Must keep up on all mandated training including First Aid/CPR/AED.
• Comfortable and competent with PCs and Microsoft Office.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner
