Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:
Required experience: six years of field experience testing, calibrating, repairing, and modifying combustion control and instrumentation systems in a physical plant environment utilizing either steam boilers operating at one hundred pounds per square gauge (psig) or higher, or hot water boilers operating at 400 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Applicants should indicate the pounds per square gauge or degrees Fahrenheit in connection with their experience.
Applicants possessing an associate degree in engineering technology, mechanical technology, mechanical engineering, or mechanical engineering technology may be credited with two years of required experience; applicants possessing a bachelor’s degree in the same fields may be credited with four years of the required experience.
Applicants may also be appointed to this position if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title.
Duties Description • Calibration, operation and maintenance of combustion controls, instrumentation, boilers, burners and auxiliary equipment.
• Complete inspections, monitoring, reporting, diagnostics and repair of all combustion, auxiliary and other plant controls.
• Computer programming of boiler applications, plant applications, variable frequency drive applications, and auxiliary environmental control applications that are critical to the agency’s mission and in compliance with Department of Environmental Conservation’s air permits.
• Provide recommendations and training in the operation and maintenance of the OGS Power Plants.
Operational Needs:
• Asbestos Supervisor certification required within 90 days of appointment, as well as compliance with all related PESH/OSHA regulations.
• Utilities Management is a 24/7 operation; thus night, weekend and holiday work are required based on operational need.
Additional Comments *There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired before May 2024 will be appointed on a temporary basis. In May 2024, satisfactory employees will receive permanent, non-competitive appointments and will begin a probationary period.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
