Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: One year experience in environmental education programs; or one year of college study with specialization in natural science, natural resources, or environmental education
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge or experience with urban forestry.
Duties Description The Urban and Community forestry program is looking for an Environmental Education Assistant to support the program’s outreach and education efforts.
Urban forests are trees where people live, work, and play, and a rapidly growing field of forestry. The Urban forestry program works closely with communities across New York to support their urban forestry programs, which include tree plantings, tree maintenance, Arbor Day, and much more.
The tasks for this position include:
1. Community contact database creation
2. Attend and work Annual ReLeaf Conference– July 24-26 in Albany
3. Event support
Support and assist in-person education and outreach events such as the National Tree Climbing Championship, ReLeaf workshops around the state, NYS Fair
4. Urban forestry photography
During events and site visits, take photos for urban forestry social media, website, and other outreach products
5. Create educational displays on urban forestry topics
Create a planting display or a model cityscape with street trees for state fair (End of August) that shows a properly planted and mulched tree, work with division Outreach staff on project
6. Urban Forestry Field Experience
Work with/ shadow our regional forestry staff on some urban forestry field visits
7. Research on Urban Wood Utilization in NY
8. Administrative tasks including mailings and data input
9. Development of outreach and education materials such as workshop flyers, social media posts, stickers, and post cards.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2025, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
