Minimum Qualifications Must have completed at least 12 credit hours of college study and be currently enrolled in an accredited degree program.
Preferred degree programs include: Public Policy, and/or Public Administration, Accounting, Business, Economics and Data Analysis and preferably completed at least 60 credit hours of college study in one of the preferred programs listed.

Each NYSDOT employee plays an important part in fulfilling the Department’s mission and goals, as we are one DOT working cohesively to ensure the state has a safe, efficient, balanced and environmentally sound transportation system.
Based on interests, skills and availability, Student Assistants will receive training and perform many of the following tasks or activities, under supervision by Budget staff:
• Utilize the Statewide Financial System (SFS) to process financial transactions and monitor financial activity using reporting tools;
• Process and monitor requests that require approval by the Division of the Budget (DOB) including funding recommendations, personnel actions, and contract funding proposals;
• Prepare and distribute various financial and staffing reports to supervisors and other managers;
• Provide guidance to program and accounting staff on the use of financial and budgetary coding used in SFS for various types of transactions;
• Prepare confidential financial guidance to managers on budgetary proposals that would affect various program areas; and
• Plan and execute long-term projects in coordination with Budget & Finance staff to provide analysis on programs and/or improve business processes.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
