Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent non-competitive or 55b/c service as a Research and Collections Technician (Archaeology).

Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have A bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in archaeology, anthropology, history, in one of the natural sciences (e.g., biology, zoology, geology), or related fields AND one year of professional experience assisting in scientific or historical research in the field or in artifact/specimen care and maintenance in a laboratory or a museum.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• A master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, public archaeology or related field and two years of experience in a cultural resource management (CRM) program.
• Applicants with demonstrated expertise in the archaeology of New York State or nearby areas.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Research and Collection Technician in the Archaeology Unit of the New York State Museum. Under the supervision of a Museum Scientist 4 of the Museum’s Cultural Resources Survey Program (CRSP), Research and Collections Division, the incumbent participates in archaeological fieldwork for CRSP projects throughout New York State: Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Perform reconnaissance survey and site examination and data recovery excavation at archaeological sites to all current Cultural Resource Management (CRM) professional standards;
• Serve as field crew member or as crew chief as assigned, may also serve in a leadership role in absence of the project director;
• Assist with training of seasonal field staff and ensure proper use of vehicles and equipment;
• Assist with laboratory work and analysis, including assisting artifact processing, cleaning, organizing, labeling, photographing, and cataloging, using Museum standard practices;
• Conduct library and archival research and contribute to technical reports for client and review agencies;
• Complete report production and distribution to all current professional standards, and enter field notes and other data into electronic databases; and
• Interact with public and with client agencies, and assist with Museum public outreach, such as providing material for Museum social media and making presentations to school groups and other visitors.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a contingent permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree and experience will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. This position will require up to 80% Statewide travel from April-November.

This position leads to a maximum salary of $66,634 based on annual performance advances.
