Duties Description 1. Supervise Region 9 Hazardous Waste Remediation North Section staff of the Division of Environmental Remediation in the Buffalo office.
Responsibilities include the following programs: State Superfund, Brownfield Cleanup Program, Voluntary Cleanup Program, and all other program elements for the cleanup and management of hazardous waste sites.
2. Prepare Annual Work Plan to meet Regional and Central Office program goals and priorities. Give clear direction to staff regarding assigned responsibilities. Distribute work load equitably according to staff strengths to establish an effective and efficient work unit.
3. Meet with staff regularly and track assigned work to ensure continued progress toward objectives. Keep performance programs and evaluations up to date.
4. Ensure time and attendance reports are submitted on time, process travel expense forms in a timely manner; provide guidance and direction regarding compliance with Department regulations, policy, and direction.
5. Responsibly manage all resources and budget assigned to the unit.
6. Respond to all inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
7. Coordinate with other DEC Programs, Regions, and other State, federal, and local agencies. Communicate in a positive and productive manner.
8. Must be available and prepared to respond to events during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, and be available and “on call” as needed. All duties will be discussed during the interview.
9. Attend and support staff at public meetings, including presentations to the general public.
10. Coordinate program enforcement with Regional Attorney and Office of General Counsel.
11. Keep Regional Director, Regional Engineer, and other DEC program managers informed of program accomplishments, emerging issues, enforcement, and high-profile situations through effective written and verbal communication. Provide backup coverage for Regional Engineer as needed.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be available for emergency response.
Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
