Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age and physically capable of performing the duties and assigned to the position. A driver license or Commercial Driver License appropriate to the types of vehicles operated may be required for some positions.
Duties Description Facility Operations Assistants may work independently or on a crew to assist in maintaining canal equipment and structures, as well as the grounds and facilities at historic canal sites. A Facility Operations Assistant may be responsible for running heavy equipment, including commercial riding mowers and forklifts.
Additional Comments The New York State Canal Corporation (Canals), a subsidiary of the New York Power Authority, is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the 524-mile waterway for boating, recreation, tourism and agriculture. The New York State Canal System includes the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals, linking the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, the Finger Lakes and Lake Champlain. The 200-year-old NYS Canal System extends over 524 miles and plays important roles in New York’s economic development, tourism industry and environmental stewardship.
