Minimum Qualifications Assistant Research Scientist, Grade 14: a bachelor’s degree in biology, public health, epidemiology, infection control, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science, or a related degree* AND at least one year of post degree professional research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.
Research Scientist 1, Grade 18: a bachelor’s degree in biology, public health, epidemiology, infection control, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science, or a related degree*, AND at least two years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a Master’s degree in one of the above fields, AND at least one year of post-degree professional research experience.
*Related Degrees may include: Medical Anthropology, Psychology, Nutrition, Nursing, Pharmacology, Mathematics, Education, Medical Geography, Sociology, Economics, or other relevant Social Science, or Natural Sciences.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will possess a master's degree in epidemiology, public health, data science, health information, statistics/biostatistics, or a closely related health science degree. They will have experience in scientific research, public health surveillance or evaluation. The preferred candidate will have intermediate or advanced proficiency in SAS, BASE, SQL, R, Tableau, or Geographical Information System (GIS) software.
Duties Description The Research Scientist (RS) will participate in all phases of environmental, occupational, and reproductive epidemiological research. The incumbent will work under the technical direction of higher-level research scientists to better assist in research studies that monitor and evaluate the effects of exposure to toxic substances at home, work, and within the community.
The incumbent will assist with exposure investigations and surveillance to help identify and reduce health risks within the public. They will also assist higher level scientists in data collection and organization, data linkage and analyses, and summarizing results through tables, graphs, and reports.
The Research Scientist will have a background in environmental, occupational, reproductive epidemiologic research; exposure assessment; identification/ surveillance of adverse health outcomes; environmental risk factors; basic skills in statistical analysis; and a working knowledge of geographic information systems.
Additional Comments One full-time, contingent-permanent, non-competitive appointment opportunity. Appointment level maybe made at the Assistant Research, or the Research Scientist 1 level based on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
